What is the relationship between Canvas, Structure Sensor, and Occipital?
From its launch in November 2016 until June 2020, Canvas only worked in conjunction with a Structure Sensor (which gave the iPad the necessary ability to perceive measurements from a scene). Since then, however, Canvas has extended support to iPads and iPhones with a built-in LiDAR sensor, which offers comparable results without requiring extra hardware. The sale of Structure Sensor for Canvas was also discontinued in October 2020, but support for existing Structure Sensor owners remains the same.
Two different websites (canvas.io and structure.io) are maintained as the brands are marketed very differently — Canvas being focused on the home improvement industry, and Structure being marketed for a wide variety of industries and uses spanning robotics, 3D printing, and more. You can always find the latest information about using Canvas on this website.
The Short Version:
- Canvas is the name of our software application for room scanning, which can be used with an iPad + Structure Sensor, or an iPad or iPhone which has a LiDAR sensor integrated into the device (you can learn which devices have this here)
- Structure Sensor is the name of the 3D sensor for mobile devices built by Occipital, used by both Canvas as well as other applications. You can learn more about Structure Sensor (and related applications) here.
