What is the relationship between Canvas, Structure Sensor, and Occipital?
Canvas and Structure Sensor are both products made by Occipital, Inc., a computer vision technology company based in Boulder, CO and San Francisco, CA. They were, quite literally, made to work together.
The Short Version: Canvas is the name of our software (purpose-built for room scanning), and Structure Sensor is the name of the hardware (which can be used both with Canvas as well as other applications).
Specifically, Structure Sensor is a mobile 3D sensor that gives your iPad the ability to perceive depth and "see in 3D." Its underlying SLAM (Simultaneous Localization And Mapping) technology combines that data with your iPad’s color camera and IMU in order to create a 3D model of your space. This hardware and core computer vision software is what powers Canvas. However, it is also available to other developers via the Structure SDK, and it can be used for many different purposes besides just room scanning. You can learn all about these other uses here, or visit the Structure Sensor App Gallery.
Canvas wraps this technology in an elegant, user-friendly iPad application ready for everyday consumers and home improvement professionals. The Canvas iPad app can be downloaded directly from the App Store here, but it does require Structure Sensor to actually scan spaces.
